Bryan Girard Quartet - 2-5 p.m.
440 First Street
Benicia, CA 94510
707-745-1400
Price: FREE!

I'll be playing with saxophonist Bryan Girard's quartet, which also includes longtime friend Robb Fisher on bass and James Harman on guitar.  It's a nice second floor setting at the First Street Bar and Grill, the food and drinks are excellent, and the music should hit the right vibe, soft enough to slide in the background if you desire, but interesting enough to get your attention when you want to exercise your ears!  I haven't played with Bryan in many years, so I'm looking forward to getting together with him again.  We'll be here from 2-5 p.m.  Come on out for some jazz on a Sunday afternoon!  (Bryan is here every Sunday, with a rotating cast of players, so this is a regular event for this venue.)

Open Rehearsal with the Don Piestrup Big Band - 7:30 - 10 p.m.
116 9th Street

The Don Piestrup Big Band is probably the longest running pro "kicks" band in the Bay Area.  Don's writing was heard extensively with the Buddy Rich Band in the sixties and seventies and remains colorful.  The rehearsals happen once a month, usually on the first Monday of the month and people drop by to listen and visit.  If you're in the SoMarket area, drop in for a minute.

KQED
Our American Family - 6:30 p.m.
Price: See below

This isn't a performance for me, but I thought I'd post it here, since "Our American Family" has put together a half hour documentary about my Mom's side of the family.  It tells the story of how my grandparents came to the United States, settled in the Huntington Beach/Wintersburg area.  It will be airing on KQED TV at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 10th (Mothers Day).  I've seen a preview of the documentary and it is quite humbling and stirring.  If I was in the same situation, I'm not sure I would have been able to do what my grandparents and parents did.  They were truly special people, quite extraordinary.  It's great that this documentary fills in a lot of gaps on my family's history.  I hope you will join me and check out this program.
